The Sheffield Kidney Institute is one of the largest tertiary referral nephrology centres  in the United Kingdom, serving a population of about 1.7 million. Inpatient care is based at the Northern General Hospital campus of the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust  with 38 dedicated renal beds. A comprehensive range of services are provided including general nephrology care, haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and renal transplantation.

There are satelite haemodialysis units at Sheffield Heeley, Barnsley, Chesterfield and Rotherham. In addition there are a number of specialist clinics including Renal Genetics Clinic,  Renal-Rheumatology SLE Clinic, Renal-Obstetric Clinic and a Transition Clinic for adolescents with kidney disease.
